KAVANAUGH HEARING STARTS… Senate confirmation hearings for Brett Kavanaugh as Supreme Court pick got off to a wild start yesterday as Senate Democrats and protesters in the public gallery took an aggressive stance against the confirmation. Capitol Police arrested 70 people for protesting Kavanaugh at the hearing and in other parts of Capitol Hill. Democrats accused the White House and Republicans of concealing key details about Kavanaugh’s time as a Bush-era White House lawyer by refusing to publicly release tens of thousands of documents. They also complained about being provided 42,000 documents just hours before the hearing. Hearings will resume this morning.

DOUG DUCEY TO SUCCEED McCAIN IN SENATE… Arizona Governor Doug Ducey yesterday selected former U.S. Senator Jon Kyl to succeed the late Senator John McCain. The 76-year-old Kyl could be sworn in as early as tonight. Kyl, who retired in 2013 after rising to become the second-highest-ranking Republican, has agreed to serve at least through the end of the year.

CAPUANO LOSES IN MASSACHUSETTS PRIMARY… Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley pulled off a major upset in defeating 10-term incumbent Michael Capuano in a primary for Massachusetts’ 7th District House seat yesterday. Pressley will be heavily favored to win the general election in November and become the first African-American elected to Congress from the state. She worked for former Democratic congressman Joe Kennedy II of Massachusetts and former Democratic Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts before being elected to the Boston City Council in 2009.

NORTH CAROLINA TO USE GERRYMANDERED CONGRESSIONAL MAP IN NOVEMBER… A panel of federal judges ruled yesterday that there is “insufficient time” before the November midterm elections to redraw an electoral map that the courts have ruled is unconstitutionally gerrymandered. Last month, the same panel ruled that North Carolina’s congressional map favors Republicans and “constitutes an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander in violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, the First Amendment, and Article I of the Constitution.” The court ruled North Carolina cannot use the current gerrymandered congressional map after the November 6 general election.

RAHM EMANUEL STEPPING DOWN AS CHICAGO MAYOR… Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced yesterday that he will seek a third term. The mayor said at a press conference that he and his wife decided to “write another chapter together” as their three children have left for college. The 58-year-old Emanuel was a Democratic congressman and White House chief of staff to President Barack Obama before becoming mayor in 2011.

GORDON MAKES LANDFALL… Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall near the Alabama-Mississippi border last night without gathering hurricane strength. The death of a child was reported in Pensacola, Florida, where a tree fell on a mobile home. A hurricane warning was in effect for much of the Gulf Coast, and parts of Alabama and Florida were under a tropical storm warning. The National Hurricane Center also warned of possible tornadoes near the Mississippi and Alabama coasts and the Florida panhandle. The tropical storm is expected to produce 4 to 8 inches of rain along the coast, and some areas could receive 12 inches of rain through tomorrow, causing flash flooding.

SPACEY WON’T BE PROSECUTED IN L.A… The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office said yesterday that it will not prosecute actor Kevin Spacey on a 1992 sexual assault accusation because it fell outside the California statute of limitations. The case, involving an adult male, had been under review since was presented to Los Angeles prosecutors in April. Last month, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office said that it was reviewing a second sexual assault accusation against Spacey.

‘WIZARD OF OZ’ SLIPPERS FOUND… A pair of ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz” has been found 13 years after they were stolen. The shoes were reported missing from a Minnesota museum in 2005 after someone broke in through a window late at night. The slippers are believed to be worth as much as $2 million.

PITTSBURGH 7 – Cincinnati 3… Starling Marte homered with a runner aboard and Gregory Polanco doubled home two runs as the Pirates downed the Reds. Joe Musgrove (6-8) took a shutout into the seventh inning.

Philadelphia 9 – MIAMI 4… Carlos Santana smacked a lead-off homer and Cesar Hernandez added a bases-clearing triple during a four-run top of the first inning and the Phillies put away the Marlins. Asdrubal Cabrera lined a two-run double and hit a solo homer.

St. Louis 11 – WASHINGTON 8… Patrick Wisdom, Paul DeJong and Marcell Ozuna all hit solo homers during a three-run top of the sixth inning and Benjie Molina added a grand slam in the ninth as the Cardinals outslugged the Nationals. Ozuna also homered during a four-run second.

MILWAUKEE 11 – Chi. Cubs 1… Jonathan Schoop lifted a sacrifice fly and singled home two runs as the Brewers crushed the Cubs. Christian Yelich contributed a two-run double. Wade Miley (3-2) held Chicago to a run on three hits over six innings.

COLORADO 6 – San Francisco 2… The Rockies came up with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past the Giants. Ryan McMahon sparked the uprising with a game-tying solo homer. Carlos Gonzalez gapped a three-run triple.

ARIZONA 6 – San Diego 0… Robbie Ray (5-2) pitched two-hit ball and struck out 10 over 6-1/3 innings as the Diamondbacks shut out the Padres. Ketel Marte went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

L.A. DODGERS 11 – N.Y. Mets 4… The Dodgers rolled past the Mets after spotting them a 4-0 lead. They put the game way with a six-run bottom of the seventh inning. Austin Barnes homered with a runner aboard. David Freese hit a solo homer and doubled home a run.

Tampa Bay 4 – TORONTO 0… Seven pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the Rays blanked the Blue Jays. Tommy Pham had a couple of hits, including an RBI triple.

CLEVELAND 9 – Kansas City 3… Yandy Diaz went 3-for-5 with a run-scoring triple and a solo homer and the Indians cruised past the Royals. Francisco Lindor’s leadoff homer sparked a three-run top of the first inning.

TEXAS 4 – L.A. Angels 2… Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus hit solo homers in the bottom of the inning and Nomar Mazara doubled home two runs in the fifth as the Rangers topped the Angels. Mike Minor (11-7) held L.A. to two runs on three hits over five innings.

HOUSTON 5 – Minnesota 2… Yuli Gurriel’s 10th homer was a two-run shot that capped a four-run bottom of the first inning and the Astros never looked back in beating the Twins. Alex Bregman knocked in two runs with a pair of doubles.

Detroit 8 – CHI. WHITE SOX 3… Grayson Greiner and Dawel Lugo hit two-run doubles during a five-run top of the second inning and Mike Mahtook hit a two-run homer in the eighth as the Tigers ripped the White Sox. Francisco Liriano (4-9) allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings. One of the runs he allowed was unearned.

N.Y. Yankees 5 – OAKLAND 1… Luke Voit and Adeiny Hechevarria hit solo homers and the Yankees handled the Athletics. Brett Gardner had a couple of hits and an RBI.

Baltimore 5 – SEATTLE 3… The Orioles came up with four runs in the top of the seventh inning to get past the Mariners. Renato Nunez homered to lead off the inning.

Boston 5 – ATLANTA 1… Steve Pearce went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead the Red Sox past the Braves. Rick Porcello (16-7) limited Atlanta to a run on two hits over five innings.
