9/11 MEMORIALS… Victims of the 9/11 attacks were remembered yesterday on the 17th anniversary of the tragic day. The biggest events were in Lower Manhattan, at the Pentagon and in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Ceremonies are also being held at New York City’s 9/11 Memorial Plaza on the World Trade Center site. 2,996 people died in the deadliest foreign attack ever on U.S. soil.

FLORENCE PREPARATIONS UNDERWAY… About 1.7 million people in three states are heading for high ground in advance of Hurricane Florence. The storm is expected to make landfall late tomorrow or early Friday. Forecasters believe it could dump as much as 2½ feet of rain and cause widespread flooding.

TROPICAL STORM FORMING OFF TEXAS… Forecasters say a tropical storm forming off the Texas Gulf Coast could bring heavy rains to the Lone Star state as early as Friday. According to the National Hurricane Center, a tropical wave on the north coast of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico has a 70 percent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within five days. Areas of Texas in the storms paths already have been soaked by recent rains.

NATIVE AMERICANS SUE OVER PIPELINE… Three Native American tribes in Montana and South Dakota are suing the Trump Administration over its granting of a permit to build the Keystone XL Pipeline. The Rosebud Sioux, Fort Belknap Indian Community and Gros Ventre tribes say the administration violated the National Environmental Policy Act and the National Historic Preservation Act by granting the permit without a proper impact study. The tribes also claim that President Trump had a personal financial stake in the pipeline because he holds as much as a half-million dollars worth of stock in TransCanada. They cited a 2015 personal public financial disclosure report filed with the Federal Election Commission in making that claim.

TRUMP POPULARITY SLIDES IN NINE POLLS… President Trump’s approval rating has dropped by an average of three points in nine recent polls. In the latest average, Trump’s approval rating is about 38% in eight polls from ABC News/Washington Post, CNN, Gallup, IBD/TIPP, the Kaiser Family Foundation, Quinnipiac University, Selzer & Co. and Suffolk University. Analysts note that if Trump’s popularity continues to wane, it could have a major impact on November’s midterms.

NICK CARTER WON’T FACE CHARGES… The Los Angeles district attorney won’t pursue charges in an alleged sexual assault case against the Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter because the statute of limitations has passed. The alleged incident took place in 2003, and it wasn’t until earlier this year that the accuser filed a police report. Carter has vehemently denied the accusation.

GEOFFREY OWENS LANDS “CSI” ROLE… Former “The Cosby Show” actor Geoffrey Owens has landed an appearance on “NCIS: New Orleans.” Owens will appear in the sixth episode of season 5, sometime in late October. The actor was in the spotlight last week when online photos of him bagging groceries while employed at Trader Joe’s went viral. Owens played Elvin Tibideaux on “The Cosby Show” from 1985 to 1992.

Arizona 6 – COLORADO 3… Ketel Marte legged out a two-run triple in the top of the sixth inning and added a two-run single in the eighth to lead the Diamondbacks past the Rockies. David Peralta connected for a game-tying two-run homer in the first.

CINCINNATI 3 – L.A. Dodgers 1… Luis Castillo (9-12) allowed just a run on four hits over 6-1/3 innings and the Reds remained unbeaten after six games with the Dodgers this season. Scott Schebler and Brandon Dixon smacked solo homers. Scooter Gennett went 2-for-3 with a run-scoring single.

CHI. CUBS 3 – Milwaukee 0… Jose Quintana (13-9) held the Brewers to three hits in a dominant 6-2/3-inning effort on the mound and the Cubs moved two games ahead of Milwaukee in the NL Central race. Ben Zobrist and Victor Caratini produced run-scoring singles in the bottom of the second inning. Caratini added an RBI double in the seventh.

ST. LOUIS 11 – Pittsburgh 5… The Cardinals pounded the Pirates to continue their push for a playoff spot. Pinch-hitter Tyler O’Neill’s three-run homer highlighted a six-run bottom of the eighth inning. Marcell Ozuna lined a two-run double and lifted a sacrifice fly. Miles Mikolas (15-4) allowed a run on five hits over seven innings.

Atlanta 4 – SAN FRANCISCO 1… Mike Foltynewicz (11-9) took a shutout into the ninth inning and hung on for a complete-game victory over the Giants. Charlie Culberson went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer.

Washington 3 – PHILADEPHIA 1… Erick Fedde (2-3) pitched two-hit ball over 5-2/3 scoreless innings and the Phillies held off the Nationals in the opener of a doubleheader. Spencer Kieboom hit a solo homer and Washington got run-scoring singles from Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman.

Washington 7 – PHILADELPHIA 6 (10 innings)… The Nationals overcame a 6-3 ninth-inning deficit to upend the Phillies and complete a sweep of the twinbill. Juan Soto’s second homer of the game was a go-ahead solo shot in the top of the 10th inning.

Miami 5 – N.Y. METS 3… Lewis Brinson doubled home two runs, J.T. Riddle homered ad the Marlins got past the Mets. Jose Ureña (6-12) surrendered a run on four hits over 6-1/3 innings.

BOSTON 7 – Toronto 2… The Red Sox scored all seven runs in their final two at-bats to down the Blue Jays for their 99th victory and become the first team in the major to clinch a playoff spot. Pinch-hitter Brock Holt delivered a three-run homer.

Houston 5 – DETROIT 4… Homers by Jose Altuve, Tony Kemp and Tyler White staked the Astros to an early 5-0 lead and they held on to edge the Tigers. The victory kept Houston three games ahead of Oakland in the NL West.

Oakland 3 – BALTIMORE 2… Mike Fiers (12-6) held the Orioles to a run on four hits over six innings and the Athletics topped the Orioles. Matt Chapman doubled home a run and scored as Oakland scored all three runs in the top of the third inning.

Cleveland 2 – TAMPA BAY 0… Shane Bieber (10-3) pitched three-hit ball and struck out 11 over 6-2/3 innings as the Indians blanked the Rays. Yan Gomes homer in the top of the fifth inning broke a scoreless tie. Edwin Encarnacion added his 30th homer in the sixth.

MINNESOTA 10 – N.Y. Yankees 5… Joe Mauer unloaded a grand slam to highlight a six-run bottom of the fifth inning and the Twins went on to double up on the Yankees. Jake Cave stroked a two-run single.

KANSAS CITY 6 – Chi. White Sox 3… Brad Keller (8-6) limited the White Sox to a run on four hits over seven innings as the Royals cruised past the White Sox. Hunter Dozer singled home two runs.

L.A. ANGELS 1 – Texas 0… Six Angel pitchers held the Rangers hitless through 7-1/3 innings and two more relievers came on to preserve the shutout victory. Jose Fernandez’ homer in the bottom of the second inning accounted for the game’s only offense.

San Diego 2 – SEATTLE 1… Wil Myers doubled home Jankowski with a tie-breaking breaking run in the top of the ninth inning and the Padres made it stand in beating the Mariners. The game featured a duel between San Diego starter Bryan Mitchell and his counterpart Marco Gonzalez, but neither got a decision.
