CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 27,190,160 and the nation’s death toll stands at 468,106, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… California surpassed New York yesterday as the state with the most coronavirus deaths. California’s number of dead has surpassed 45,000, with New York about 500 deaths behind.

SENATE PROCEEDS WITH TRUMP IMPEACHMENT TRIAL… The Senate voted 56-44 yesterday that a second impeachment trial for former President Trump is constitutional. Six Republicans crossed party lines to vote with Democrats, who accuse Trump of inciting the mob that attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6. Lawyers representing Trump argued that the proceeding was an unconstitutional, partisan effort to close off Trump’s political future even after he had already departed the White House.

BIDEN PURGES TRUMP ATTORNEYS… The Biden administration yesterday asked all but two U.S. attorneys appointed to the Justice Department by the former Trump administration to resign by the end of the month. The request came after most Trump administration appointees had already tendered their resignation. Attorneys John Durham, who is reinvestigating the origins of the Russia probe, and David Weiss of Delaware, who is conducting a tax investigation into the president’s son, Hunter Biden, have been told to remain in office.

BIDEN, YELLEN MEET WITH CEOs… President Joe Biden and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen met with some of the country’s leading chief executives yesterday to discuss the White House’s coronavirus stimulus plan. The $1.9 trillion stimulus package currently being debated in Congress includes $1,400 checks to most U.S residents, funds to create vaccine centers and help for local and state governments to keep running and a $15-per-hour minimum wage. Yesterday’s meeting followed a disappointing January jobs report that revealed that only 49,000 jobs were created with an increasing number of people giving up on their job searches. Most economists had predicted the economy would create 50,000 to 100,000 jobs.

ONE DEAD, 4 INJURED IN MINNESOTA SHOOTING… A shooting at a health clinic north of Minneapolis yesterday left one person dead and four others injured. Authorities reported that a 67-year-old man was taken into custody near the Allina Health clinic in Buffalo, Minnesota. Two of the injured were hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

… Trailblazing singer Mary Wilson, who was best known as a founding member of the Supremes, died at her home in Henderson, Nevada, of an undisclosed cause on Monday, her publicist confirmed yesterday. She was 76. After founding the Supremes with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, Ross helped develop the Motown sound with a blend of R&B and pop. The dozen chart-topping songs the group recorded in the 1960s included “Baby Love” and “Stop! In the Name of Love.” Wilson was the only original member still with the Supremes when the group broke up in 1977. She later released two solo albums and wrote four books.

SHIA LaBEOUF IN REHAB… Shia LaBeouf has reportedly left his agency and entered inpatient care for alcoholism and aggression amid recent abuse allegations exes have aired. The 34-year-old actor is taking time off work to focus solely on his recovery and get the help he needs, representatives say. Two of LaBeouf’s ex-girlfriends, including singer FKA Twigs, cited abuse in a lawsuit they filed.


DETROIT 122 – Brooklyn 111… The Pistons built an early double-digit lead and held off the Nets. Jerami Grant pumped in a game-high 32 points. Delon Wright added 22 points.

MIAMI 98 – New York 96… The Heat held the Knicks to 14 fourth-quarter points in pulling out the victory. Jimmy Butler scored 26 points and dished off 10 assists. Kelly Olynyk tossed in 20 points.

NEW ORLEANS 130 – Houston 101… The Pelicans cruised past the Rockets for their fourth straight win. Brandon Ingram scored 22 points to lead seven players in double figures. Josh Hart had 20 points and 17 rebounds off the bench.

Golden State 114 – SAN ANTONIO 91… The Warriors pulled away in the second half and handed the Spurs their first loss in four games. Stephen Curry led all scorers with 32 points. Six other players scored in double figures for Golden State.

UTAH 122 – Boston 108… The Jazz took control in the third quarter and topped Celtics for their fifth straight win. Donovan Mitchell scored a game-high 36 points. Joe Ingles added 24 points. Rudy Gobert powered his way to 18 points and 13 boards.

PORTLAND 106 – Orlando 97… Damian Lillard lit it up for 36 points and the Trail Blazers beat the Magic for the eighth straight time. Carmelo Anthony delivered 23 points off the bench.

Philadelphia 119 – SACRAMENTO 111… The 76ers got off to a fast start and then had to rally in the second half to get past the Kings. They got 25 points from Joel Embiid and 22 apiece from Tobias Harris and Seth Curry.

FLORIDA 2 – Detroit 1… Patric Hornqvist netted a go-ahead power-play goal in the second period and the Panthers made it stand in edging the Red Wings. Hornqvist also assisted on Alex Wennberg’s first-period goal.

Edmonton 3 – OTTAWA 2… The Oilers got goals from defensemen Darnell Nurse, Evan Bourchard and Tyson Barrie in downing the Senators. Goalie Mikko Koskinen made 40 saves.

Tampa Bay 6 – NASHVILLE 1… Steven Stamkos scored two goals and assisted on another as the Lightning skated past the Predators. Mikhail Sergachev had three assists. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 32 shots at goal.

Chicago 2 – DALLAS 1 (OT)… Pius Suter found the net at 2:15 of overtime to send the Blackhawks past the Stars. Mattias Janmark netted a second-period goal. Goalie Kevin Lankinen made 34 saves.

CALGARY 3 – Winnipeg 2… Elias Lindholm’s power-play goal with 1:42 remaining lifted the Flames over the Jets. Andrew Mangiapane and Byron Froese scored back-to-back goals in the second period.

VEGAS 5 – Anaheim 4… The Golden Knights recovered to beat the Ducks after blowing a three-goal third-period lead. Zach Whitecloud netted the game-winner with 3:56 left. Chandler Stephenson had a goal and an assist.

San Jose 4 – LOS ANGELES 3 (SO)… Logan Couture scored the lone goal in the shootout as the Sharks outlasted the Kings. Evander Kane scored the tying goal with 45 seconds to go in regulation.
