CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 27,692,948 and the nation’s death toll stands at 486,321, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… New York Governor Andrew Cuomo yesterday acknowledged that his office was wrong to have withheld data on COVID-19 nursing home deaths. Cuomo said at a press conference that “lessons were learned’ in not releasing the data and that things “should have been done differently.” More than 15,000 people have died in New York state’s nursing homes and long term care facilities from COVID-19, but as recently as last month, the state reported only 8,500 deaths… The nation’s leading infectious diseases expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci was awarded the Israeli-based Dan David Prize. Fauci was honored with the $1 million prize for “defending science” and advocating for COVID-19 vaccines.

BIDEN REOPENS ACA SIGNUP… Joe Biden yesterday reopened the enrollment window for signing up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act. Uninsured Americans will be able to obtain Obamacare coverage through May 15. The original enrollment period began last November and ended on December 15. The action is expected to bring relief especially to Americans who lost health insurance due to the pandemic.

PELOSI PLANS CAPITOL COMMISSION… House Speaker Nancy Pelosi yesterday announced plans “to establish an outside, independent 9/11-type Commission” to investigate last month’s attack on the U.S. Capitol. In a letter to fellow House Democrats, Pelosi said the commission will “investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021, domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex… and relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power.” Support for a commission to scrutinize the attack has gained bipartisan support from lawmakers despite former President Trump’s acquittal in his Senate impeachment trial on one count of inciting an insurrection.

SENATOR BURR CENSURED BY NORTH CAROLINA GOP… The North Carolina Republican Party yesterday voted to censure Senator Richard Burr for voting to convict former President Trump at last week’s impeachment trial. In response, Burr said the move marked a “truly sad day” for the state GOP and showed that it “has chosen loyalty to one man over the core principles of the Republican Party and the founders of our great nation.” Burr stressed that his vote was based on evidence that Trump incited the deadly Capitol attack.

BRUTAL CHILL… Two people are dead and more than 2.6 million customers were without power in Texas yesterday amid the brutal cold and record snowfall that has struck the nation’s midsection. Abilene and San Angelo were hit by more than 10 inches of snow and joined several other Teas cities in setting daily snowfall records. Several inches of snow were also expected in Oklahoma and Arkansas, with some places more than six inches by tomorrow night.

… Simone Ashley has signed on as the female lead opposite Jonathan Bailey in Season 2 of the Netflix period drama series “Bridgerton.” The second season will chronicle the pursuit of a suitable marriage for the eldest Bridgerton sibling, Anthony, played by Bailey. Ashley will play Anthony’s romantic interest, Kate Sharma. The series is based on Julia Quinn’s romance novels. Filming is scheduled for spring in London.

OPRAH LANDS ROYAL INTERVIEW… Oprah Winfrey has landed a sit-down interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for a CBS primetime special that will air on March 7. Winfrey will speak with Markle first about becoming a member of the royal family, marriage, motherhood, philanthropic work and being under the public eye. Harry will then join the conversation to discuss their move to the U.S. and the future of their family.


Chicago 120 – INDIANA 112 (OT)… The Bulls outlasted the Pacers after letting a fourth-quarter lead slip away. Zach LaVine scored a game-high 30 points.

WASHINGTON 131 – Houston 119… Bradley Beal pumped in 37 points and the Wizards outgunned the Rockets. Russell Westbrook scored 16 points and dished off 15 assists.

NEW YORK 123 – Atlanta 112… Julius Randle knocked down seven 3-pointers on his way to 44 points in leading the Knicks past the Hawks. RJ Barrett added 21 points.

UTAH 134 – Philadelphia 123… The Jazz ran past the 76ers in a matchup of conference leaders. Jordan Clarkson came off the bench to score 40 points. Donovan Mitchell dropped in 24 points and Joe Ingles tossed in 20.

GOLDEN STATE 129 – Cleveland 98… Stephen Curry scored 36 points before sitting out the fourth quarter and the Warriors dealt the Cavaliers their eighth straight loss. Five other players scored in double figures for Golden State.

L.A. CLIPPERS 125 – Miami 118… Marcus Morris made six 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 32 points as the Clippers downed the Heat for their fourth straight win. Ivica Zubac delivered 22 points off the bench.

Brooklyn 136 – SACRAMENTO 125… The Nets fought off the Kings despite playing without the injured Kevin Durant. Kyrie Irving led the way with 40 points. James Harden racked up 29 points, 13 rebounds and 14 assists.

ARIZONA 1 – St. Louis 0… Clayton Keller scored a second-period goal and the Coyotes made it stand in blanking the Blues. Goalie Darcy Kuemper stopped all shots.

N.Y. Islanders 3 – BUFFALO 1… Anders Lee and Jean-Gabriel netted first-period goals and the Islanders cruised past the Sabres to run their points streak to seven games. Josh Bailey had two assists.

Ottawa 6 – TORONTO 5 (OT)… The Senators came from four goals down late in the second period to upend the Maple Leafs. Evgenii Dadonov netted a tying goal with 2:01 left in regulation and added the game-winner at 2:19 of overtime. Connor Brown had a goal and an assist.

CAROLINA 7 – Columbus 3… The Hurricanes skated past the Blue Jackets after spotting them an early two-goal lead. Brock McGinn scored two goals and assisted on two others. Teuvo Teravainen had a goal and three assists.

Florida 6 – TAMPA BAY 4… Six different players found the net as the Panthers topped the Lightning. Aleksander Barkov had a goal and an assist.

Chicago 3 – DETROIT 2 (OT)… The Blackhawks recovered to outlast the Red Wings after letting a two-goal lead slip away. Dominik Kubalik scored the winning goal at 4:43 of overtime.

Winnipeg 6 – EDMONTON 5… Mark Scheifele scored a goal and had two assists as the Jets held off the Oilers. Kyle Connor and Blake Wheeler both had a goal and an assist.

Calgary 4 – VANCOUVER 3 (OT)… Johnny Gaudreau scored on a power play 23 seconds into overtime to send the Flames past the Canucks. Milan Lucic, Elias Lindholm and Dillon Dube scored in regulation.

SAN JOSE 3 – Anaheim 2… Second-period goals by Kevin Labanc and Logan Couture carried the Sharks past the Ducks. Couture also had an assist. Martin Jones made 26 saves at goal.

NFL NEWS… Former NFL wide receiver Vincent Jackson was found dead yesterday in a Florida hotel room. He was 38. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said Jackson’s body was discovered in a hotel and there were no apparent signs of trauma. Jackson played for the San Diego Chargers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers during a 12-year career that ended in 2016.
