CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,426,310 and the nation’s death toll stands at 598,744, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The reduced risk of coronavirus transmission outdoors has prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to remove its mask requirement on travelers in outdoor transit hubs and in outdoor spaces on ferries, buses and trolleys. The change followed a lengthy review by the White House Office of Management and Budget’s regulatory arm. Masks are still required indoors on all forms of transportation” regardless of vaccination status.

BIDEN MEES WITH BORIS JOHNSON… President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson met in England yesterday to strengthen the U.S.-U.K. alliance. The bilateral meeting was Biden’s first overseas summit with a foreign leader since becoming president. During a 90-minute session, the two leaders laid out their “global vision” in an updated version of the Atlantic Charter of 1941.

LAWMAKERS SAY INFRASTRUCTURE DEAL AT HAND… A group of bipartisan lawmakers announced yesterday that they have reached an infrastructure deal to present to Congress. The group of 10 Democrats and Republicans who were tapped by Biden for the task said they had reached an agreement on a “realistic, compromise framework to modernize our nation’s infrastructure and energy technologies” and would not be funded by tax increases. Biden had initially proposed a $2 trillion package in March but has dropped it in half while seeking Republican support.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT TARGETED POLITICAL OPPONENTS… The New York Times reported last night that former President Donald Trump’s Justice Department got a subpoena from Apple to spy on politically opposed members of Congress and their families. House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff and fellow California Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell were the targets of the surveillance. Schiff is calling for an inspector general investigation into whether any misconduct was involved in the surveillance. Prosecutors were reportedly looking for the sources behind news stories about contacts between Russia and Trump associates.

3 DEAD IN SOUTH FLORIDA SHOOTINGS… A man fatally shot a grandmother and her 1-year-old grandson inside a South Florida grocery store before killing himself, authorities say. The shootings occurred inside a Publix Supermarket in Royal Palm Beach. The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office identified the shooter as a 55-year-old man and said there is “no known motive or relationship between the gunman and the victims.”

… Netflix announced yesterday that Season 2 of the coming-of-age comedy “Never Have I Ever” will premiere July 15. The series centers on an Indian American teenager following the death of her father. “Never Have I Ever” stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and its co-stars include Poorna Jagannathan, Ramona Young, Lee Rodriguez, Richa Moorjani and John McEnroe.

COLBERT RETURNING WITH STUDIO AUDIENCE… “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” has booked former “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart as its first in-studio guest when the returns with a live, fully-vaccinated audience to New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater on Monday. Colbert has worked from home and interviewed celebrities remotely during the pandemic. In addition to Stewart, Monday night’s guests include comedian Dana Carvey and Oscar and Grammy-Winning Artist H.E.R.

L.A. Dodgers 6 – PITTSBURGH 3
(8 innings)… Julio Urías worked six innings on the mound and singled home a pair of runs in the Dodgers’ win over the Marlins. Mookie Betts smacked a solo homer in the top of the first inning. Zack McKinstry lifted a sacrifice fly and singled home a run.

Milwaukee 7 – CINCINNATI 2… Jace Peterson knocked in three runs with a single and a double as the Pirates cruised past the Reds. Daniel Vobelbach homered with a runner aboard.

PHILADELPHIA 4 – Atlanta 3 (10 innings)… The Phillies came up with three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to upend the Braves. Jean Segura stroked a game-winning two-run single after opening the scoring with an eighth-inning RBI double.

MIAMI 11 – Colorado 4… Adam Duvall, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Starling Marte homered during a six-run bottom of the second inning and the Marlins never looked back in their pounding of the Rockies. Trevor Rogers (7-3) allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings.

San Francisco – WASHINGTON (ppd)… Rain in the nation’s capital forced postponement of last night’s Giants-Nationals game. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader tomorrow.

DETROIT 8 – Seattle 3
… Robbie Grossman hit a two-run homer and the Tigers got solo shots from Jonathan Schoop and Jake Rogers in downing the Mariners. Grossman also singled home a run.

BOSTON 12 – Houston 8… J.D. Martinez drilled his 13th homer, Christian Arroyo blasted a three-run homer and the Red Sox outslugged the Astros to salvage the series finale. A pair of dropped fly balls contributed to a five-run bottom of the sixth inning.

CHI. WHITE SOX 5 – Toronto 2… Yasmani Grandal hit a two-run homer to cap a three-run bottom of the first inning and the White Sox handled the Blue Jays. Adam Engel also went deep.

MINNESOTA 7 – N.Y. Yankees 5… Josh Donaldson and Nelson Cruz cracked two-run homers in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the Twins past the Yankees. Cruz also lifted a sacrifice fly and doubled home a run.

Kansas City 6 – OAKLAND 1… Royals starter Mike Minor (5-3) held the Athletics to a run on three hits over seven innings. Andrew Benintendi and Jorge Soler hit a two-run homer and Andrew Benintendi added a solo shot in the top of the eighth inning.

Kris Middleton scored 35 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Giannis Antetokounmpo added 33 points and 14 boards. The series remains in Milwaukee for Game 4 on Sunday.

UTAH 117 – L.A. Clippers 111… The Jazz held off the Clippers in the second half to take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinals. Donovan Mitchell scored a game-high 37 points. Rudy Gobert brought down 20 rebounds to go with his 13 points. The series shifts to Los Angeles for tomorrow’s Game 3.

Philadelphia is at Atlanta for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals with the series tied 1-1…
Denver hosts Phoenix for Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals with the Suns leading 2-0

VEGAS 6 – Colorado 3… The Golden Knights doubled up on the Avalanche to wrap up the West Division second-round playoff series in six games after dropping the first two. They advance to take on Montreal in the Stanley Cup playoff semifinals beginning Monday. Six different players found the net for Vegas. Alex Pietrangelo had a goal and an assist.
