CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,474,758 and the nation’s death toll stands at 599,945, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Vermont yesterday became the first state to reach 80 percent of its eligible population having at least one vaccine shot. More than 444,000 Vermont residents over the age of 12 have received at least one dose, the state’s Department of Health said. Governor Phil Scott celebrated the occasion by signing an order that removed the mandate for masks, social distancing and capacity limits for indoor places. Vermont businesses can still issue COVID-19 related restrictions if they choose to.

BIDEN CONCLUDES NATO SUMMIT… President Joe Biden yesterday wrapped up his first meeting with NATO ally leaders by emphasize the U.S.’ “rock solid and unshakable” commitment to defend them. Following the summit in Brussels, Biden told reporters that during he had focused on security challenges posed by Russia and China. He promised fellow leaders that “America is back!” and re-iterated his commitment to Article 5 of North Atlantic Treaty, which guarantees that an attack on one member of the alliance is an attack on all and will be met with a collective response.

D.C. APPEALS COURT JUDGE CONFIRMED… The Senate yesterday approved the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the federal appeals court in the District of Columbia. Jackson got the support from Republican senators Susan Collins of Maine, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska in the 53-44 vote. Jackson, a judge on the federal district court in D.C., fills the seat vacated by Attorney General Merrick Garland.

REALITY WINNER RELEASED… Former National Security Administration contractor Reality Winner, who pleaded guilty to leaking to the press classified information about Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, is being released from prison. Winner’s attorney said the release is not a product of the pardon or compassionate release process, but rather the time earned from exemplary behavior while incarcerated.” In 2018, Winner was sentenced to five years and three months in prison for violating the Espionage Act by provided The Intercept with secret documents.

ILLINOIS CHEMICAL-PLANT FIRE… A massive fire at a chemical plant in Rockton, Illinois, yesterday prompted the evacuation of all residents within a one-mile radius. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker activated the state’s National Guard and deployed emergency vehicles to support local authorities fighting the blaze. The mandatory evacuation order affected about 150 homes. Some 70 workers were able to make it out of the factory after the fire broke out and there were no injuries reported.

… Eric Clapton has announced plans for an eight-city run of shows in September. His tour kicks off September 13 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, and wraps up September 26 at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida. According to a press release, Clapton will schedule no other North American dates for the year. He has not performed in public since the start of the pandemic.

‘GREENLAND’ SEQUEL COMING… Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin have signed on to star in a sequel to the 2020 thriller “Greenland.” The two actors are returning as John and Allison Garrity in “Greenland: Migration” and find themselves having to leave their Greenland bunker and find a new home across Europe’s frozen wasteland. “Greenland” was released in August and earned more $52 million worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic.

N.Y. METS 5 – Chi. Cubs 2
… Domonic Smith homered and Kevin Pillar doubled home two runs as the Mets topped the Cubs. David Peterson (2-5) pitched one-hit ball over six scoreless innings.

WASHINGTON 3 – Pittsburgh 2… Kyle Schwarber singled home a tying run in the bottom of the third inning and smacked a go-ahead solo homer in the seventh to push the Nationals past the Pirates.

Cincinnati 10 – MILWAUKEE 2… The Reds pounded the Brewers for their fourth straight win. Joey Votto had a couple of hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBIs. Aristides Aquino also homered with a runner aboard. Vladimir Gutierrez (3-1) allowed two runs on four hits over six innings.

ST. LOUIS 4 – Miami 2… Tyler O’Neill delivered a tie-breaking run-scoring double in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Cardinals got past the Marlins. Paul Goldschmidt and Edmundo Sosa both had a couple of hits and an RBI.

COLORADO 3 – San Diego 2… Austin Gomber (6-5) limited the Padres to three hits over eight scoreless innings and the Rockies held on for the win. C.J. Cron homered to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning.

SAN FRANCISCO 5 – Arizona 2… Brendan Crawford hit a two-run homer and lifted a sacrifice fly as the Giants dealt the Diamondbacks their 20th straight road loss. Curt Casali had three of San Francisco’s 14 hits.

L.A. DODGERS 3 – Philadelphia 1… Will Smith homered with a runner aboard in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Dodgers the lead for good in their win over the Phillies. Chris Taylor homered to lead off the fifth.

CLEVELAND 4 – Baltimore 3
… Jose Ramirez singled home a run and came around to score during a three-run bottom of the first inning and then doubled home the decisive run in the sixth to lead the Indians past the Orioles.

BOSTON 2 – Toronto 1… Rafael Devers singled home Alex Verdugo with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Red Sox edged the Blue Jays. Verdugo doubled home the game’s first run in the third.

Detroit 10 – KANSAS CITY 3… The Tigers breezed past the Royals to snap a three-game skid despite losing staring pitcher Matthew Boyd and reliever Alex Lange to injuries. Niko Goodrum singled home two runs and homered. Wili Castro and Robbie Grossman also went deep.

Tampa Bay 5 – CHI. WHITE SOX 2… Austin Meadows homered with a runner aboard in the top of the first inning and the Rays got solo shots from Brandon Lowe and Randy Arozarena in downing the White Sox for their fourth straight win.

OAKLAND 8 – L.A. Angels 5… Sean Murphy connected for a two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning and the Athletics added five more runs in the third to put away the Angels. Mitch Moreland stroked a two-run single. Sean Manaea (6-2) allowed a run on nine hits over 5-2/3 innings.

SEATTLE 4 – Minnesota 3… Jake Bauers blasted a tie-breaking homer in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Mariners made it stand in topping the Twins. Ty France sliced a run-scoring double in the fifth and scored the tying run on Dylan Moore’s triple.

Trae Young scored 25 points and dished off 18 assists. Bogdan Bogdanovic added 22 points. Clint Capela grabbed 13 rebounds to go with his 12 points. The series returns to Philadelphia for tomorrow’s Game 5.

L.A. CLIPPERS 118 – Utah 104… The Clippers held the Jazz to 13 first-half points in building a 24-point halftime lead and tied the Western Conference semifinals at two games apiece. Kawhi Leonard and Paul George scored 31 points apiece. Marcus Morris Sr. tossed in 24 points. Game 5 is tomorrow in Salt Lake City.

Milwaukee is at Brooklyn for Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals with the series tied 2-2

VEGAS 4 – Montreal 1… The Golden Knights cruised past the Canadiens to open the Stanley Cup semifinal series. Shea Theodore had a goal and an assist. Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves. The series remains in Las Vegas for Game 2 tomorrow.
