CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,485,068 and the nation’s death toll stands at 600,272, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The Biden administration yesterday announced its plan to provide more than $1 billion in federal COVID-19 relief funds for hundreds of community development lenders. Vice President Kamala Harris made the announcement alongside Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen at a press conference. Some $1.25 billion will be sent to 863 community development financial institutions to provide capital to small businesses, particularly in underserved communities… The governors of New York and California lifted most restrictions imposed during the pandemic. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo removed social distancing requirements, capacity limits and contact tracing. California Governor Gavin Newsom ended capacity limits, mask rules and social distancing for vaccinated people. Masks are still required on public transit in both states as well as in hospitals and schools.

BIDEN ADMINISTRATION GOES AFTER DOMESTIC TERRORISM… The Biden’s administration yesterday unveiled a new national strategy to counter the rise in domestic terrorism. The strategy includes four main points and seeks $100 million to add key personnel in the departments of justice and homeland security. It also calls for monitoring federal employees who could pose an inside threat. One of the main goals of the strategy is to improve the sharing of information across federal agencies to track domestic terrorism.

GOVERNMENT WATCHDOG CLEARS BORDER-WALL HALT… The Government Accountability Office confirmed yesterday that the Biden administration broke no budgetary law with its decision to halt funding for border wall construction. The watchdog’s legal opinion said the freezing of funds is a “programmatic delay” and doesn’t violate the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act. Critics said the freezing of funds broke the law that requires the administration to spend the money that Congress appropriates for particular projects. However, the GAO said the executive branch has the discretion to pause the funding for things such as environmental reviews and consultations with stakeholders.

SENATE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES JUNETEENTH BILL… The Senate voted unanimously yesterday to pass a bill that makes Juneteenth a federal holiday. The holiday will celebrate the end of slavery in the U.S. It marks the day—June 19, 1865 – that word reached Blacks in Galveston, Texas, that the war was over and they had been freed. If the legislation passes in the House as expected, it would become the 11th federal holiday.

4 DEAD IN CHICAGO SHOOTINGS… Authorities say four adult women were fatally shot in Chicago yesterday morning after an argument turned violent. The shootings occurred inside a home and also left four people injured. Two of them, both males, were shot in the back of the head and their conditions were not disclosed. A 23-year-old man and another woman were treated for gunshot wounds and remain in critical condition.

… Disgraced film producer and convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein will be extradited to Los Angeles to face additional rape and sexual assault charges after prosecutors obtained a judge’s approval yesterday. The 69-year-old Weinstein is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence in New York for sexual assault and rape. Los Angeles prosecutors allege Weinstein also sexually assaulted at least five women between 2004 and 2013. Charges they’ve filed against him range from forcible sexual assault to forcible rape.

ACTRESS LISA BANES DIES… Actress Lisa Banes, whose credits included the films “Cocktail” and “Gone Girl,” died yesterday in a New York City hospital 10 days after being struck by a scooter rider. She was 65. Authorities say Banes was crossing an intersection when the scooter rider ran a red light, hit her and kept going on June 4. The driver of the scooter has not been found. Banes lived in Los Angeles but had been in New York to appear in a show at the Manhattan Theater Club.

N.Y. METS 3 – Chi. Cubs 2
… Pete Alonso drove in all three Mets runs with a two-run single and a sacrifice fly. Starter Taijuan Walker (6-2) held the Cubs to two runs n five hits and struck out 12 over seven innings.

WASHINGTON 8 – Pittsburgh 1… Yan Gomes’ grand slam highlighted the Nationals’ romp over the Pirates. Trea Turner went 4-for-5 with an RBI triple. Patrick Corbin (4-5) gave up a run on eight hits over 8-1/3 innings.

Cincinnati 2 – MILWAUKEE 1 (10 innings)… The Reds scored twice in the top of the 10th inning without a hit and held on outlast the Brewers. Eugenio Suárez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Kyle Farmer lifted a sacrifice fly.

ST. LOUIS 2 – Miami 1… Paul Goldschmidt stroked a game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning and led off the ninth with a walkoff homer as the Cardinals edged the Marlins.

COLORADO 8 – San Diego 4… The Rockies doubled up on the Padres after spotting them a four-run lead. Ryan McMahon homered, tripled and drove in four runs. Raimel Tapia hit a pair of run-scoring doubles.

SAN FRANCISCO 9 – Arizona 8… The Giants erased a 7-0 second-inning deficit in handing the Diamondbacks their 21st straight road loss. Mike Yastrzemski completed the comeback with a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning. Steven Duggar homered with a runner aboard for San Francisco.

L.A. DODGERS 5 – Philadelphia 3… Mookie Betts hit a go-ahead homer to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning and added an RBI single in the eighth to push the Dodgers past the Phillies. Zack McKinstry had a couple of hits and an RBI.

N.Y. Yankees 6 – TORONTO 5
… Clint Frazier came through with a tie-breaking pinch-hit RBI double in the top of the eighth inning and the Yankees made it stand in edging the Blue Jays. Gary Sanchez and Chris Gittens also went deep.

CLEVELAND 7 – Baltimore 2… Eddie Rosario’s two-run double capped a five-run bottom of the fourth inning and the Indians went on to extend the Orioles’ road losing streak to 17 games. Bobby Bradley singled home a run and homered.

Detroit 4 – KANSAS CITY 3… The Tigers held off the Royals and handed them their fifth straight loss. Jonatan Schoop homered with a runner aboard. Miguel Cabrera had a couple of hits, including an RBI single.

CHI. WHITE SOX 3 – Tampa Bay 0… Dallas Keuchel (6-1) pitched four-hit ball over seven innings and got help from two White Sox relievers in the blanking of the Rays. Danny Mendick singled home a run and Adam Engel homered for Chicago.

HOUSTON 6 – Texas 3 (10 innings)… Jose Altuve unloaded a grand slam in the top of the 10th inning and the Astros put away the Rangers. Carlos Correa tied the game with a two-out solo homer in the ninth.

OAKLAND 6 – L.A. Angels 4… Elvis Andrus double home two runs and Sean Murphy homered as the Athletics got past the Angels. Frankie Montas (7-6) allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings.

SEATTLE 10 – Minnesota 0… Chris Flexen (6-3) pitched four-hit ball over eight innings and got plenty of support in the Mariners’ blanking of the Twins. J.P. Crawford, Luis Torrens and Ty France hit solo homers. Shed Long Jr. legged out a bases-clearing triple.

Boston 10 – ATLANTA 8
… Alex Verdugo connected for a tie-breaking three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning and the Red Sox held off the Braves. Rafael Devers also hit a three-run blast. Hunter Renfroe and Xavier Bogaerts smacked solo blasts.

Kevin Durant racked up 49 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists. Jeff Green delivered 27 points off the bench. The series returns to Milwaukee for Game 6 tomorrow.

TAMPA BAY 4 – N.Y. Islanders 2… Third-period goals by Jan Rutta and Victor Hedman proved to be the difference as the Lightning topped the Islanders to even the Stanley Cup semifinals at a game apiece. Nikita Kucherov assisted on three goals. The series shifts to Brooklyn for tomorrow’s Game 5.

Montreal is at Vegas for Game 2 of the Stanley Cup semifinals with the Golden Knights leading 1-0
