CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,498,506 and the nation’s death toll stands at 600,653, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Health officials say the Delta variant of the coronavirus, which originated in India, now makes up 10 percent of all U.S. COVID cases. The finding reflects a 6 percent increase from last week.

BIDEN MEETS WITH PUTIN… U.S. President Joe Biden said the U.S. and Russia have room to “significantly improve” their relationship yesterday following his first summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders met in Switzerland on the sidelines of a G7 meeting in Britain. Biden described the meeting as generally “positive,” adding that “I did what I came to do.” He said he pressed Putin on human rights abuses, specifically the detainment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT REVERSES ASYLUM RESTRICTIONS… Attorney General Merrick Garland yesterday reversed Trump-era restrictions on asylum cases based on domestic and gang violence. Garland cited an executive order by President Joe Biden that instructed officials to determine whether current asylum policies provide refuge to victims of gang and domestic violence “in a manner consistent with international standards.” Many Central American migrants along the southern border claim to be victims of domestic and gang violence when applying to enter the U.S.

HACKERS ARRESTED… Authorities in Ukraine announced yesterday that they have arrested six members of a notorious hacking group that has targeted a number of U.S. institutions with ransomware attacks. Those arrested are believed to be members of the C10p hacking group. During raids of suspects’ homes, police seized computers, vehicles and almost $200,000 in cash, officials said. In the past, C10p has targeted several universities in California, Florida, Maryland and Colorado, hijacking computer data and holding it for ransom.

HOUSE MAKES JUNETEENTH HOLIDAY.. The House voted overwhelmingly yesterday to make Juneteenth the nation’s 11th federal holiday. Supporters are hopeful President Joe Biden will sign the measure into law by Saturday, which would be the actual day being celebrated. The June 19th holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. on the day a Union general brought word to Galveston, Texas, that enslaved African-Americans had been emancipated and the Civil War was over. The news arrived more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. In yesterday’s 415-14 tally, all 14 representatives who opposed the new holiday were Republicans.

JENNIFER LOPEZ LANDS NETFLIX SCI-FI FILM
… Jennifer Lopez will star in a new Netflix sci-fi thriller. In “Atlas,” the 51-year-old entertainer portrays a woman fighting for humanity against an AI soldier who has determined the only way to end war is to eliminate humans. Lopez will also co-produce.

JIMMY KIMMEL IS A BOWL-GAME SPONSOR… Late-night talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel revealed yesterday that his name will be attached as a title sponsor of a new college football bowl game. The Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl will debut December 18 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. Organizers confirmed that they have reached a multiyear deal to put Kimmel’s name above the title of the event. The game will feature the Mountain West champion against the Pac-12′s No. 5 bowl selection.

COLORADO 8 – San Diego 7… Charlie Blackmon singled home Trevor Story with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Rockies fought off the Padres. Story produced a pair of run-scoring doubles for Colorado. C.J. Cron homered with a runner aboard and Elias Diaz smacked a solo shot.

WASHINGTON 3 – Pittsburgh 1… Josh Bell’s two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to be the difference in the Nationals’ win over the Pirates. Yan Gomes also went deep. Paolo Espino (1-2) limited Pittsburgh to three hits over five innings in recording his first major-league victory at age 34.

N.Y. METS 6 – Chi. Cubs 3… Kevin Pillar and Domonic Smith both homered and knocked in two runs as the Mets doubled up on the Cubs. New York starter Jacob deGrom fanned eight over just three innings but left with a shoulder injury he claimed isn’t serious.

SAN FRANCISCO 13 – Arizona 7… Buster Posey and Brandon Belt blasted three-run homers and the Giants dealt the Diamondbacks their 22nd straight road loss, tying a record that was shared by the 1963 New York Mets and 1943 Philadelphia Athletics. LaMonte Wade Jr., Steven Dugger and pinch-hitter Wilmer Flores also went deep for San Francisco.

Philadelphia 2 – L.A. DODGERS 0… Zack Wheeler (5-3) pitched five-hit ball over six innings and two relievers held the Dodgers hitless the rest of the way. Rhys Hoskins provided all the offense Philadelphia needed with a first-inning homer. J.T. Realmuto added a run-scoring double in the third.

… Willi Castro hit a game-tying two-run homer during a three-run top of the seventh inning and the Tigers scored a pair of runs on wild pitches in putting away the Royals. Nomar Mazara had two hits, including an RBI single.

Yasmani Grandal singled home Vaughn with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning. Andrew Vaughn doubled home a run and scored in the fifth. Jose Abreu opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the fourth.

OAKLAND 8 – L.A. Angels 4… The Athletics erased an early four-run deficit in downing the Angels. Matt Chapman’s RBI single sparked a six-run bottom of the sixth inning. Ramon Laureano homered with the bases empty.

N.Y. Yankees 3 – TORONTO 2… Gary Sánchez came through with a pinch-hit two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning and the Yankees held off the Blue Jays. Gerrit Cole (8-3) gave up two runs on four hits over eight innings.

CLEVELAND 8 – Baltimore 7… Cesar Hernandez’ two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning proved decisive in the Indians’ win over the Orioles. Jose Ramirez homered in the first and singled home two runs in the third. Cleveland starter Aaron Civale (10-2) became the majors’ first 10-game winner despite a rocky five-inning effort. Baltimore has lost 18 in a row on the road.

HOUSTON 8 – Texas 4… Jose Altuve and Chas McCormick each homered twice and the Astros cruised past the Rangers. Martin Maldonado and Matt Straw also homered.

Minnesota 7 – SEATTLE 2… Nelson Cruz cracked a three-run homer and Ryan Jeffers followed with a solo shot in the top of the fifth inning as the Twins put away the Mariners. Jorge Polanco had three hits and scored three runs.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,485,068 and the nation’s death toll stands at 600,272, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The Biden administration yesterday announced its plan to provide more than $1 billion in federal COVID-19 relief funds for hundreds of community development lenders. Vice President Kamala Harris made the announcement alongside Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen at a press conference. Some $1.25 billion will be sent to 863 community development financial institutions to provide capital to small businesses, particularly in underserved communities… The governors of New York and California lifted most restrictions imposed during the pandemic. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo removed social distancing requirements, capacity limits and contact tracing. California Governor Gavin Newsom ended capacity limits, mask rules and social distancing for vaccinated people. Masks are still required on public transit in both states as well as in hospitals and schools.

BIDEN ADMINISTRATION GOES AFTER DOMESTIC TERRORISM… The Biden’s administration yesterday unveiled a new national strategy to counter the rise in domestic terrorism. The strategy includes four main points and seeks $100 million to add key personnel in the departments of justice and homeland security. It also calls for monitoring federal employees who could pose an inside threat. One of the main goals of the strategy is to improve the sharing of information across federal agencies to track domestic terrorism.

GOVERNMENT WATCHDOG CLEARS BORDER-WALL HALT… The Government Accountability Office confirmed yesterday that the Biden administration broke no budgetary law with its decision to halt funding for border wall construction. The watchdog’s legal opinion said the freezing of funds is a “programmatic delay” and doesn’t violate the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act. Critics said the freezing of funds broke the law that requires the administration to spend the money that Congress appropriates for particular projects. However, the GAO said the executive branch has the discretion to pause the funding for things such as environmental reviews and consultations with stakeholders.

SENATE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES JUNETEENTH BILL… The Senate voted unanimously yesterday to pass a bill that makes Juneteenth a federal holiday. The holiday will celebrate the end of slavery in the U.S. It marks the day—June 19, 1865 – that word reached Blacks in Galveston, Texas, that the war was over and they had been freed. If the legislation passes in the House as expected, it would become the 11th federal holiday.

4 DEAD IN CHICAGO SHOOTINGS… Authorities say four adult women were fatally shot in Chicago yesterday morning after an argument turned violent. The shootings occurred inside a home and also left four people injured. Two of them, both males, were shot in the back of the head and their conditions were not disclosed. A 23-year-old man and another woman were treated for gunshot wounds and remain in critical condition.

WEINSTEIN TO BE EXTRADITED TO L.A
… Disgraced film producer and convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein will be extradited to Los Angeles to face additional rape and sexual assault charges after prosecutors obtained a judge’s approval yesterday. The 69-year-old Weinstein is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence in New York for sexual assault and rape. Los Angeles prosecutors allege Weinstein also sexually assaulted at least five women between 2004 and 2013. Charges they’ve filed against him range from forcible sexual assault to forcible rape.

ACTRESS LISA BANES DIES… Actress Lisa Banes, whose credits included the films “Cocktail” and “Gone Girl,” died yesterday in a New York City hospital 10 days after being struck by a scooter rider. She was 65. Authorities say Banes was crossing an intersection when the scooter rider ran a red light, hit her and kept going on June 4. The driver of the scooter has not been found. Banes lived in Los Angeles but had been in New York to appear in a show at the Manhattan Theater Club.

More than 444,000 Vermont residents over the age of 12 have received at least one dose, the state’s Department of Health said. Governor Phil Scott celebrated the occasion by signing an order that removed the mandate for masks, social distancing and capacity limits for indoor places. Vermont businesses can still issue COVID-19 related restrictions if they choose to.

BIDEN CONCLUDES NATO SUMMIT… President Joe Biden yesterday wrapped up his first meeting with NATO ally leaders by emphasize the U.S.’ “rock solid and unshakable” commitment to defend them. Following the summit in Brussels, Biden told reporters that during he had focused on security challenges posed by Russia and China. He promised fellow leaders that “America is back!” and re-iterated his commitment to Article 5 of North Atlantic Treaty, which guarantees that an attack on one member of the alliance is an attack on all and will be met with a collective response.

D.C. APPEALS COURT JUDGE CONFIRMED… The Senate yesterday approved the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the federal appeals court in the District of Columbia. Jackson got the support from Republican senators Susan Collins of Maine, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska in the 53-44 vote. Jackson, a judge on the federal district court in D.C., fills the seat vacated by Attorney General Merrick Garland.

REALITY WINNER RELEASED… Former National Security Administration contractor Reality Winner, who pleaded guilty to leaking to the press classified information about Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, is being released from prison. Winner’s attorney said the release is not a product of the pardon or compassionate release process, but rather the time earned from exemplary behavior while incarcerated.” In 2018, Winner was sentenced to five years and three months in prison for violating the Espionage Act by provided The Intercept with secret documents.

ILLINOIS CHEMICAL-PLANT FIRE… A massive fire at a chemical plant in Rockton, Illinois, yesterday prompted the evacuation of all residents within a one-mile radius. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker activated the state’s National Guard and deployed emergency vehicles to support local authorities fighting the blaze. The mandatory evacuation order affected about 150 homes. Some 70 workers were able to make it out of the factory after the fire broke out and there were no injuries reported.

CLAPTON TO TOUR
… Eric Clapton has announced plans for an eight-city run of shows in September. His tour kicks off September 13 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, and wraps up September 26 at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida. According to a press release, Clapton will schedule no other North American dates for the year. He has not performed in public since the start of the pandemic.

‘GREENLAND’ SEQUEL COMING… Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin have signed on to star in a sequel to the 2020 thriller “Greenland.” The two actors are returning as John and Allison Garrity in “Greenland: Migration” and find themselves having to leave their Greenland bunker and find a new home across Europe’s frozen wasteland. “Greenland” was released in August and earned more $52 million worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,426,310 and the nation’s death toll stands at 598,744, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The reduced risk of coronavirus transmission outdoors has prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to remove its mask requirement on travelers in outdoor transit hubs and in outdoor spaces on ferries, buses and trolleys. The change followed a lengthy review by the White House Office of Management and Budget’s regulatory arm. Masks are still required indoors on all forms of transportation” regardless of vaccination status.

BIDEN MEES WITH BORIS JOHNSON… President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson met in England yesterday to strengthen the U.S.-U.K. alliance. The bilateral meeting was Biden’s first overseas summit with a foreign leader since becoming president. During a 90-minute session, the two leaders laid out their “global vision” in an updated version of the Atlantic Charter of 1941.

LAWMAKERS SAY INFRASTRUCTURE DEAL AT HAND… A group of bipartisan lawmakers announced yesterday that they have reached an infrastructure deal to present to Congress. The group of 10 Democrats and Republicans who were tapped by Biden for the task said they had reached an agreement on a “realistic, compromise framework to modernize our nation’s infrastructure and energy technologies” and would not be funded by tax increases. Biden had initially proposed a $2 trillion package in March but has dropped it in half while seeking Republican support.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT TARGETED POLITICAL OPPONENTS… The New York Times reported last night that former President Donald Trump’s Justice Department got a subpoena from Apple to spy on politically opposed members of Congress and their families. House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff and fellow California Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell were the targets of the surveillance. Schiff is calling for an inspector general investigation into whether any misconduct was involved in the surveillance. Prosecutors were reportedly looking for the sources behind news stories about contacts between Russia and Trump associates.

3 DEAD IN SOUTH FLORIDA SHOOTINGS… A man fatally shot a grandmother and her 1-year-old grandson inside a South Florida grocery store before killing himself, authorities say. The shootings occurred inside a Publix Supermarket in Royal Palm Beach. The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office identified the shooter as a 55-year-old man and said there is “no known motive or relationship between the gunman and the victims.”

‘NEVER HAVE I EVER’ PREMIERE SET
… Netflix announced yesterday that Season 2 of the coming-of-age comedy “Never Have I Ever” will premiere July 15. The series centers on an Indian American teenager following the death of her father. “Never Have I Ever” stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and its co-stars include Poorna Jagannathan, Ramona Young, Lee Rodriguez, Richa Moorjani and John McEnroe.

COLBERT RETURNING WITH STUDIO AUDIENCE… “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” has booked former “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart as its first in-studio guest when the returns with a live, fully-vaccinated audience to New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater on Monday. Colbert has worked from home and interviewed celebrities remotely during the pandemic. CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,414,114 and the nation’s death toll stands at 598,765, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The White House has announced plans to buy and donate 500 million doses of Pfizer’s vaccine to other countries. The White House released plans to distribute 25 million doses last week, with 19 million being shared with Covax, an initiative backed by the World Health Organization that has allocated 81 million doses to 129 countries so far… Houston hospital system is suspending nearly 200 workers for two weeks without pay for refusing to get vaccinated against COVID-19. The suspensions at Houston Methodist follow a Monday deadline for all employees to be fully immunized. Nearly 25,000 employees got their shots in time.

BIDEN IN BRITAIN… President Joe Biden told U.S. troops stationed in Britain last night that “the United States is back” and that democracies of the world must rally together to confront the challenges of the day. Biden addressed the troops at the Royal Air Force Mildenhall, about 90 miles northeast of London, during the first leg of his first overseas trip as president. Biden’s eight-day trip includes visits to Belgium and Switzerland for meetings with politicians, royalty and NATO allies. The president will attend summits with the Group of Seven nations, the European Union and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

KEYSTONE PIPELINE SPONSORS CALL OF PROJECT… The sponsor of the Keystone XL crude oil pipeline announced yesterday that it is calling off project after Canadian officials failed to persuade President Joe Biden to reverse his cancellation of its permit. Calgary-based TC Energy had hoped to use the pipeline to transport crude from the oil sand fields of western Canada to Steele City, Nebraska. Construction began last year when former President Donald Trump revived the long-delayed project after it had stalled under the Obama administration. Biden canceled the 1 200-mile pipeline in January over longstanding concerns that burning oil sands crude would make climate change worse.

IRS SENDS MORE STIMULUS CHECKS… The IRS has announced that it will send millions more additional stimulus checks to eligible Americans, with another 2.3 million payments issued yesterday. The latest round of payments is part of the Biden administration’s efforts under the American Rescue Plan to deliver $1,400 to each eligible adult and child. The IRS says it has now delivered more than 169 million payments worth $395 billion, with the last batch of checks amounting to a total of $4.2 billion.

TEXAS AG UNDER INVESTIGATION… The Associated Press reported yesterday Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is being investigated by the state’s bar association for his attempt to have the 2020 presidential election overturned in favor of Donald Trump. The State Bar of Texas wants to know whether Paxton’s actions amount to professional misconduct. Critics accuse Paxton of trying to disenfranchise the voters in multiple states.

VP HARRIS MEETS WITH MEXICAN PRESIDENT… Kamala Harris discussed immigration policy with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in Mexico City yesterday as part of her first trip abroad as vice president. Harris’ Mexico visit comes after a day after she urged Central Americans to stay away from the U.S. border and use legal means of entering the country. Harris has been tasked with slowing the migrant surge at the southern border amid the highest number of migrants since 2006, according to preliminary Customs and Border Protection data.

DHS RELEASES CHILD-SEPARATION DATA… The Department of Homeland Security revealed yesterday that the Trump administration separated more than 3,900 children from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border over four years, leaving more than half without a confirmed record of reunification. The separations were part of Trump’s “zero-tolerance” policy toward undocumented border-crossers. Children were taken from their parents and placed in the care of the Department of Health and Human Services while their parents were prosecuted and deported. A report by the DHS’ Interagency Task Force on the Reunification of Families says non-governmental agencies have helped identify 3,913 separated children. 1,779 have been reunited with their families, but no record of confirmed reunification exists for 2,127 children.

FBI STING NAILS DRUG TRAFFICKERS… The Justice Department said yesterday that roughly 800 suspects are facing charges following a years-long sting targeting worldwide drug transactions. Officials say the FBI nabbed the suspects by secretly running a phone encryption program that criminals unwittingly used to buy and sell narcotics. More than 300 criminal organizations in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe used the FBI’s encrypted device company and unknowingly communicated about narcotics shipments. Several tons of marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine have been seized, as well as different currencies totaling $48 million, officials said.

McAULIFE WINS VA GOVERNOR DEM PRIMARY… Former Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe won the Democratic Party’s nomination to return for a second term in office. McAuliffe will face GOP nominee and political newcomer Glenn Youngkin in the November general election. The 64-year-old McAuliffe held office from 2014 to 2018. He was prohibited by state law from seeking a consecutive term.

SENATE REJECTS PAYCHECK FAIRNESS ACT… The Senate voted 50-49 yesterday to reject legislation intended to address the gender pay gap. Democrats needed 60 votes to end the filibuster and advance the Paycheck Fairness Act to the floor for a vote. The bill would “provide more effective remedies to victims of discrimination in the payment of wages on the basis of sex.” Pennsylvania Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick was the only Republican to vote in favor.

HBO RENEWS ‘HACKS’
… HBO Max announced yesterday that it has renewed “Hacks” for a second season. The series stars Jean Smart as a Las Vegas stand-up comedian who hires a fledgling TV writer to write jokes for her act. The first season finale will air Thursday. Hacks st HBO Max reports that Hacks has remained in its top 10 since it “Hacks” premiered May 13 and the first-season finale airs tomorrow night.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD TO TOUR… The Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd has announced plans to hit the road next week. The band’s “Big Wheels Keep on Turnin’ Tour” kicks off June 13th in Forest City, Iowa, and includes 30 dates ending November 19 in Bossier City, Louisiana. The group’s core members include founding guitarist Gary Rossington, singer Johnny Van Zant and guitarist Rickey Medlocke. Special guests on the tour include Eighties rockers Tesla on most dates. Kansas, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Blackberry Smoke, Allman Betts Band and the Marshall Tucker Band will also open select shows.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,362,153 and the nation’s death toll stands at 597,624, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The number of vaccine doses administered in the U.S. topped 300 million yesterday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced. The seven-day average of new daily cases reported has decreased from 65,053 on April 1 to 12,780 on June 5. The seven-day average of new daily deaths reported decreased from 681 to 367 during the same time period, according to the CDC.

ROUGH START TO VP HARRIS’ TRIP… Kamala Harris overcame a rough start to make her first trip abroad as vice president yesterday. A plane carrying Harris on a trip to Guatemala and Mexico was forced to return to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland about 30 minutes after takeoff due to a technical issue. The vice president departed in another plane about an hour and a half later. Harris is set to spend two days meeting with the presidents of her two host nations and checking in with organizers helping stem migration.

SWALWELL FINALLY SERVES BROOKS… California Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell has succeeded in serving his Republican counterpart from Alabama, Mo Brooks, with a lawsuit seeking to hold him partially accountable for the January 6 insurrection. Recent court filings revealed that Swalwell’s legal team had to hire a private investigator to find Brooks and give him the papers after the congressman began purposely evading their attempts. The papers were reportedly served to Brooks at his home via his wife.

3 DEAD, 6 INJURED IN MIAMI-DADE SHOOTING… Three people were fatally shot and six others were injured early yesterday in a mass shooting at a graduation party outside a strip-mall restaurant in Kendall, Florida. It was Miami-Dade County’s second mass shooting in two weeks. Police said gunfire erupted after two cars pulled up into the strip mall and someone inside one of the vehicles opened fire on people leaving the restaurant.

OLDEST MALE CHIMP IN U.S. ZOO DIES AT 63… The San Francisco Zoo has announced the death of the oldest male chimpanzee in an accredited U.S. zoo. Cobby died Saturday at age 63, the zoo said, and is missed by many. The average life expectancy of the 100,000 to 200,000 chimpanzees that remain living in the wild is about 33 years, according to zoo officials, but they can live twice as long under human care.

ACTOR CLARENCE WILLIAMS III DIES
… Actor Clarence Williams III died Friday of complications from colon cancer, his management announced yesterday. He was 81. Williams as best known for playing detective Linc Hayes in the 1960s cop drama “The Mod Squad” and as Prince’s father in “Purple Rain.” His television roles included an FBI agent in “Twin Peaks” and an alien in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.”

TAYLOR SWIFT TOPS ALBUM CHART… Taylor Swift’s “Evermore” sold 202,000 copies in returning to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for a fourth nonconsecutive week. Last week’s champ, Olivia Rodrigo’s “Sour,” slipped into second place with 186,000 units sold. J. Cole’s “The Off-Season” dropped to third place after selling 58,000 copies. Roughly a third of the 80 million COVID-19 vaccines that President Joe Biden has pledged to provide internationally this month “without expectation of political favors in return” were shipped yesterday. The shipments are being made under the COVAX international vaccine-sharing program, Biden said, with some 6 million doses in the initial shipment going to Latin America and the Caribbean, about 7 million doses to South and Southeast Asia and roughly 5 million to Africa. The remaining doses, amounting to just over 6 million, would be shared among countries that include Canada, Mexico, India and South Korea.

BIDEN EXPANDS CHINESE INESTMENT BAN… President Joe Biden yesterday signed an executive order that expands the ban on U.S. investment in Chinese companies deemed national security threats. An executive order signed by former President Donald Trump in November prevented U.S. investors from trading stock in companies associated with the Chinese military, defense and surveillance technology firms. Biden’s order designated 11 additional Chinese firms that U.S. investors are prohibited from trading with, bringing the total to 59.

CAPITOL ATTACK CAUSED $1.5M DAMAGES… The January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol caused $1.5 million in damages, according to the Justice Department. The figure was disclosed during the prosecution of a Florida man who pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of obstructing an official proceeding. A plea agreement calls for Paul Allard Hastings to “pay restitution to the Department of Treasury in the amount of $2,000,” according to a letter from federal prosecutors.. More than 440 people have been charged in connection with the Capitol attack.

POSTMASTER GENERAL DeJOY UNDER INVESTIGATION… The Washington Post reported yesterday that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is the target of an FBI investigation into an alleged private sector campaign finance scheme. The newspaper previously reported in September that employees at DeJoy’s North Carolina transport company felt pressured into donating to Republican candidates and that DeJoy reimbursed them through bonuses between 2000 and 2014. Reimbursement of campaign contributions would constitute a violation of state and federal election laws.

TRAFFIC FATALITIES ROSE DURING PANDEMIC… A Department of Transportation report released yesterday found that motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the U.S. rose to a 13-year high in 2020 despite a decrease in overall driving due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The report compiled by the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that 38,680 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes, reflecting a 7.2 percent increase from the 36,096 fatalities reported in 2019 and the largest projected number of fatalities since 2007. The increase comes despite preliminary Federal Highway Administration data showing that vehicle miles traveled decreased by about 13.2 percent in 2020.

‘M:I5’ SHUT DOWN AGAIN
… A positive coronavirus test among the crew has prompted another shutdown in the filming of the latest “Mission: Impossible” film. Production on the sequel is being shut down while those involved self-isolate. “Mission: Impossible VII,” which stars Tom Cruise as IMF agent Ethan Hunt, shut down at the outset of the pandemic in February 2020. In December, audio surfaced of Cruise berating crew members for standing too close together and violating COVID safety procedures. The film has a May 27, 2022, release date.

GRAND FUNK RAILROAD TO TOUR… The legendary rock band Grand Funk Railroad has announced plans to launch a North American tour next month. The “Some Kind of Wonderful” tour kicks off July 2 in Fayetteville, Georgia, and runs through December 3, with more dates being added in the future. The band features original members Don Brewer and Mel Schacher along with Max Carl, Bruce Kulick and Tim Cashion. Grand Funk Railroad is best known for the hit songs Some King of Wonderful,” “We’re an American Band,” “I’m Your Captain/Closer to Home” and “Locomotion.”

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,306,936 and the nation’s death toll stands at 595,825, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… President Joe Biden yesterday announced a “National Month of Action” and outlined additional steps his administration is taking to reach its goal of 70 percent of U.S. adults receiving at least one Covid-19 shot by July 4. The administration is highlighting free child care for parents while they get a shot, vaccines available at barbershops and sporting events, pharmacies staying open 24 hours on Fridays and free beer from Anheuser-Busch when the goal is met. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows that 62.8 percent of the U.S. adult population has received at least one dose and more than 133.5 million American adults are fully vaccinated.

TRUMP DOJ SEIZED REPORTERS’ PHONE RECORDS… The New York Times reported yesterday that the Justice Department under former President Trump seized phone records from four reporters for The New York Times while investigating a leak likely related to former FBI Director James Comey. Reporters Matt Apuzzo, Adam Goldman, Eric Lichtblau and Michael Schmidt had records seized, the Times reported. The Justice Department is believed to have taken similar measures when targeting reporters for CNN and The Washington Post.

CAPITOL ATTACKER PLEADS GUILTY… A 38-year-old Florida man pleaded guilty yesterday to charges related to the January 6 riot attack on the U.S. Capitol. Paul Allard Hodgkins entered his guilty plea to a single count of obstruction of an official proceeding. Prosecutors agreed to drop four other misdemeanor charges Hodgkins faced. Federal sentencing guidelines indicate Hodgkins could receive a prison sentence of between 15 months and 21 months, and a fine of $7,500 to $75,000 for the obstruction charge as well as a $2,000 restitution fine.

NASA PLANS VENUS TRIPS… NASA announced plans yesterday to launch two new discovery missions to Venus between 2028 and 2030. The upcoming trips will mark the first time in 30 years NASA probes have visited the “inferno-like” planet. The selected mission concepts, chosen from the agency’s Discover 2019 competition, are called DAVINCI+ and VERITAS. They each will be awarded approximately $500 million for development, NASA announced.

CHAUVIN SEEKS MERCY IN SENTENCING… Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin asked a judge yesterday to sentence him to a term of probation or a shorter prison term than suggested by Minnesota guidelines in a sentencing memorandum. A memo filed by Chauvin’s lawyers noted the defendant’s lack of previous criminal history, his previous work as a police officer and the risk he could be victimized in prison as factors the judge should consider as he weighs a sentence. Prosecutors, meanwhile asked for a sentence of 30 years. Chauvin was convicted April 21 of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the killing of George Floyd. A jury agreed with prosecutors who said Chauvin caused Floyd’s death when he pinned him to the ground with a knee on his neck for more than nine minutes during a May 2020 arrest in Minneapolis.

… Robert Hogan, who racked up more than 150 acting credits during his long career as a television actor, has died from complications from pneumonia. He was 87. Hogan portrayed Reverend Tom Winter in more than 60 episodes of “Peyton Place” and appeared as Louis Sobotka in four episodes of “The Wire.” The actor was a helicopter pilot on MAS*H, a judge on “Law & Order” and guest-starred multiple times on “Gunsmoke,” “The F.B.I.,” “Murder She Wrote,” “The Rockford Files,” “77 Sunset Strip” and “Barnaby Jones.” His other television credits include “Batman,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “Bonanza,” “Mission: Impossible,” “Hawaii Five-O” and “I Dream of Jeannie.”

SHOWTIME RENEWS ‘CITY ON A HILL’… Showtime announced yesterday that it is renewing the series “City on a Hill” for a third season. VP HARRIS TO LEAD VOTER-PROTECTION EFFORT… President Joe Biden announced yesterday that Vice President Kamala Harris will lead the administration’s efforts to protect voting rights. The announcement followed Biden’s condemnation of voter-suppression efforts launched by Republican-led legislatures in Texas and other states. Democrats blocked the restrictive voting bill in Texas, prompting Republican Governor Greg Abbott’s threat to defund the state legislature.

BIDEN IN TULSA… During a visit to Tulsa yesterday to mark the 100th anniversary of a race massacre that left hundreds of Black Americans dead, President Joe Biden vowed to shed light on the reality of an event that has been hidden in our nation’s history. The president also outlined actions to expand home ownership and small business ownership in disadvantaged communities. As part of yesterday’s events, the president met with survivors of the attacks on May 31 and June 1, 1921, when an armed White mob ravaged the wealthy Black neighborhood of Greenwood in Tulsa. The violence destroyed 35 city blocks.

BIDEN ADMINISTRATION SUSPENDS ARCTIC DRILLING LEASES… The Biden administration has suspended oil drilling leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. President Biden had promised to protect the fragile Alaskan tundra from fossil fuel extraction and the move would halt drilling in one of the largest tracts of untouched wilderness in the U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland issued a formal order pausing the leases until her agency has completed an environmental analysis of their impact and a legal review of the Trump administration’s decision to grant them.

FLORIDA GOVERNOR SIGNS GIRLS TRANS BILL INTO LAW… Florida Governor Ron DeSantis yesterday signed into law a bill that limits girls’ sports at public schools to biological girls. The bill also would allow another student to sue if a school allows a transgender girl or woman to play on a team intended for biological females. The signing drew backlash from many who called it hurtful and harmful, including Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, who is viewed as a potential Democratic candidate to challenge DeSantis.

DEM WINS NM HOUSE SEAT… Democrat Melanie Stansbury easily won an election to fill the New Mexico U.S. House seat vacated by Deb Haaland upon her confirmation as Secretary of the Interior. She defeated third-term Republican state Senator Mark Moores by more than 30,000 votes in a district seen as a potential pickup for Republicans. Democrats held a 219-211 majority in Congress going into yesterday’s vote.

COACHELLA ANNOUNCES COMEBACK
… The Coachella music festival has announced its comeback from the pandemic. The festival will resume on the weekends of April 15-17 and 22-24, 2022, according to organizers. The 2020 Coachella music festival was among the first major events postponed or canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and it was forced to cancel its 2021 dates as well. Coachella is currently accepting registrations and tickets go on sale Friday.

FOO FIGHTERS TO TOUR… The Foo Fighters have announced plans to hit the road this summer on a delayed 25th anniversary tour. The tour was scheduled in 2020 but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 25th-26th Anniversary Tour will kick off July 28 in Cincinnati and run through August 9 in Albuquerque. The Foo Fighters will also perform at Lollapalooza music festival in July and Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in September.
