CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,723,122 and the nation’s death toll stands at 605,567, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… President Joe Biden yesterday called for a renewed urgency to get more Americans vaccinated against Covid-19 amid case surges in parts of the country. The delta variant now makes up more than half of all new Covid-19 infections in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

TOWER DEATH TOLL AT 36… Another eight victims were pulled from the rubble of the collapsed Champlain Towers South building in Surfside, Florida, yesterday, raising the death toll to 36. Authorities say 109 people remain missing. The search for more victims is carrying on despite the approach of Tropical Storm Elsa. Concerns over the storm’s impact prompted officials to demolish a still-standing section of the building on Sunday night.

RNC CONTRACTOR HACKED… Hackers working on behalf of the Russian government breached the computer systems of a contractor for the Republican National Committee. The Russian government-affiliated group known as Cozy Bear allegedly targeted the IT service company Synnex late last week. It is unclear what data may have stolen and the RNC itself has denied that any of its systems were breached. Cozy Bear is the same group that hacked the Democratic National Committee in 2016 and released reams of internal emails

ELSA STRIKES FLORIDA… Tropical storm Elsa strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane as it struck Florida’s southwestern coast yesterday. The storm brought heavy rain and 75-mph wind to Tampa and other cities on the Gulf of Mexico, prompting authorities to issue flood warnings as well as tornado and hurricane watches. The storm is expected to make landfall in Florida’s panhandle region in the coming days and continue into the southeastern U.S., though it will weaken as it moves inland.

ERIC ADAMS WINS NY MAYOR DEM PRIMARY… Former police captain Eric Adams has been declared the winner of the race to pick a Democratic candidate to be New York City’s mayor. Adams, currently borough president of Brooklyn, promised in his campaign to be tough on crime. Police figures last month showed crime in the city rose by 22 percent in the past 12 months and shootings were up 73 percent. Adams will be a heavy favorite over Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa in November’s general election.

SPEARS COURT-APPOINTED ATTORNEY RESIGNS
… The court-appointed attorney who has represented Britney Spears throughout the duration of her almost 13-year conservatorship has submitted a petition to resign. Samuel D. Ingham said in a court filing that the resignation would be effective upon the designation of new court-appointed counsel for Spears. On Tuesday, Spears’ manager of 25 years, Larry Rudolph, also submitted a letter of resignation, citing the singer’s desire to retire.

CAST ADDITIONS TO ‘GAME OF THRONES’ PREQUEL… HBO announced yesterday that actresses Milly Alcock and Emily Carey have joined the cast of the “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon.” Alcock will play a young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, with Emma D’Arcy to portray an older version of the character. Carey will portray a young Alicent Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke. Other cast members include Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen and Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon. The series is set 300 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.”

… Bryan Reynolds drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Rodolfo Castro with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Reynolds’ sacrifice fly in the third scored Adam Frazier with the game’s first run.

MIAMI 2 – L.A. Dodgers 1 (10 innings)… Starling Marte raced home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Marlins outlasted the Dodgers. Jesus Aguilar singled home a tying run in the sixth.

Philadelphia 15 – CHI. CUBS 10… Andrew McCutchen unloaded a grand slam in the top of the first inning and Bryce Harper added a three-run blast to cap a six-run seventh as the Phillies outslugged the Cubs. Rhys Hoskins had three hits, including a homer, and four RBIs.

ARIZONA 4 – Colorado 3… David Peralta was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to force home Stuart Fairchild with the winning run. David Peralta, Eduardo Escobar and Christian Walker produced run-scoring doubles during a three-run first.

St. Louis 6 – SAN FRANCISCO 5… Nolan Arenado’s two-run homer gave the Cardinals an early lead and they held off the Giants. Edmundo Sosa added a solo shot. Yadier Molina stroked a run-scoring single among his three hits.

SAN DIEGO 7 – Washington 4… Wil Myers homered, doubled and drove in five runs to lead the Padres past the Nationals. Manny Machado went 3-for-4 with an RBI single.

Milwaukee – N.Y. METS (ppd)… Rain in New York forced postponement of last night’s Brewers-Mets game. It will be made up as part of a split doubleheader today.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
BALTIMORE 7 – Toronto 5
… Cedric Mullins and Anthony Santander hit two-run homers during a five-run bottom of the fifth inning that carried the Orioles past the Blue Jays. Pedro Severino also homered with a runner aboard. Spenser Watkins (1-0) limited Toronto to a run on three hits over five innings in his major-league debut.

TEXAS 10 – Detroit 5… John Hicks hit a two-run homer and singled home a run in leading the Rangers past the Tigers. Brock Holt and Adolis Garcia also connected. David Dahl went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI doubles.

HOUSTON 9 – Oakland 6… The Astros erased a 6-2 fourth-inning deficit on their way past the Athletics. Yordan Alvarez went 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBIs. homered twice and knocked in five runs. Jose Altuve singled home two runs.

Chi. White Sox 4 – MINNESOTA 1… Carlos Rodon (7-3) held the Twins to a run on seven hits over six innings. Zack Collins provided all the offense the White Sox needed with a two-run single in the top of the second inning.

L.A. ANGELS 5 – Boston 3… Shohei Ohtani (4-1) gave up just two runs on five hits over seven innings on the mound sparked a three-run bottom of the first inning with an RBI double in the Angels’ win over the Red Sox. Max Stassi hit a two-run homer. David Fletcher went 4-for-4 with an RBI.

N.Y. Yankees 12 – SEATTLE 1… The Yankees used an 18-hit attack to throttle the Mariners. Giancarlo Stanton and Rougned Odor belted three-run homers. Luke Volt went 5-for-6 and drove in three runs.

Cleveland – TAMPA BAY (ppd)… The threat posed by tropical storm Elsa forced postponement of last night’s Indians-Rays game. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

INTERLEAGUE
KANSAS CITY 7 – Cincinnati 6
… The Royals came from five runs down in their final two at-bats to upend the Reds. Nicky Lopez tied the game with a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning and scored the winning run on Salvador Perez’ single. Andrew Benintendi homered with a runner aboard in the eighth.

PHOENIX 118 – Milwaukee 105… Chris Paul pumped in 32 points to lead six players in double figures and the Suns cruised past the Bucks in Game 1 of the 2021 NBA Finals. Devin Booker added 22 points. Deandre Ayton finished with 22 points and 19 rebounds. The series remains in Phoenix for Game 2 tomorrow.

NHL STANLEY CUP FINALS RESUME TONIGHT… The Tampa Bay Lightning hope to win their second straight Stanley Cup on home ice tonight when they host the Montreal Canadiens for Game 5. Tampa Bay had won the first three games of the series before falling Monday night in overtime. Puck drops at 8 p.m. Eastern.
